About Mission Yarn

As a young child, my grandmother taught me to knit—not cast on, bind off, or purl, just knit. I was very happy knitting rectangular scarves, then ripping them out and starting again.

In our family, we have a saying that everything skips a generation. My grandmother knit, my mom sews. My mom tried to convince me to sew and quilt. I did not find these things enjoyable. I am not a fan of machinery, nor am I exact in anything. I did become a cross-stitcher and quite enjoyed that. One day, I went into my LYS to get cross-stitch supplies and spotted a felted bag. I attempted to buy the sample from the shop owner, but she wisely said, "Oh, that is not for sale, but try this book, needles, and yarn and let me know if you enjoy knitting." The addiction had begun.

Now that I could cast on and bind off, I could knit any number of things—it was magic.

I started my knitting career with felted products; they were great at hiding slipped stitches and variations in gauge. But there are only so many felted bags and slippers one person can use. Then I tried my hand at hats and scarves. During the COVID lockdown, I knit exclusively shawls and wraps. Now, I knit almost exclusively sweaters, unless gift knitting.

Knitting has changed my life in so many ways! First, I just absolutely love it. Many of my friends I have met through knitting—or convinced my non-knitting friends to try knitting. I have my daughter because of knitting; one of my knitting friends set me up with one of her friends, who recommended the adoption agency I used. I even have my day job (provider recruiter for the local healthcare system) because of knitting; one of my knitting friends told me about the position and encouraged me to apply.

I have always had a passion for stash accumulation. Now, I can turn the need to possess all the yarn into a service to the knitting community. I LOVE YARN and love to try new things.

I have been blessed to be part of the local knitting guild and inspired by what others are learning and producing. I am obsessed with knitting celebs and what my favorite designers are working on. Don’t be overwhelmed by my enthusiasm for the newest pattern or greatest new yarn.

I love to teach! I taught at our local community college for about 10 years before my daughter was born. I love teaching and helping people learn new things or new ways to do the things they are naturally doing. Classes will always be a key player in the life of the shop.

I have made so many friends through knitting, and my life has definitely been enriched by the most wonderful craft. I hope that you can catch the knitting bug—or take it to the next level by coming by the shop and sharing your projects to inspire others.
